"Therapy should be free. Full stop. But we all know the deal. It ain’t. And if finding a therapist in New Orleans when you have money can be challenging, it’s almost impossible when you don’t. But there are some places in the city that either take Medicaid or offer a sliding scale. Most have a waiting list that usually averages a month. Try not to get discouraged. You can start the paperwork process, get in the queue, & if you are in crisis, MHSD’s 24-hour line is 504.826.2675 Why is it so hard to find a therapist? In part, it is a supply & demand issue since there is a shortage of licensed therapists in the state of Louisiana. But it’s also about how those on the margins in our community are usually the last to receive quality care. So this is our small start at trying to identify what is available while also working toward finding more paths to equal access therapy! On Tuesday we’ll have a stack of these cards on our table at the #BywaterArtGarden fundraiser on #GiveNolaDay we’re throwing for the Loyola Center for Education & Counseling, one of the few places that offer sliding scale.
